Search Engine Optimization for Small Businesses: A Letter to an Impatient Plumber

What search engine optimization for small businesses really does, how long it usually takes, and why patience pays, explained in a letter to one owner.

Clyde runs a plumbing company in Tulsa. Two months ago he started working on his website and his search rankings. Last week he texted a friend who builds websites: "Still not number one. Is this SEO thing a scam?" This is the letter she wrote back.

Dear Clyde,

First: no, it is not a scam. Some of the people selling it are, but the thing itself is real. Second: I know you are impatient. You fix a leak, the leak stops. You expect the same from everything. Search engine optimization for small businesses does not work like a leak. It works more like a lawn.

Let me explain what it actually does, how long it usually takes, and what you should be watching instead of checking your ranking every morning before coffee. (I know you do.)

What SEO actually does for you

Stripped of jargon, SEO is the work of making it easy for search engines to understand three things about your business:

  • What you do. Water heater repair, drain cleaning, burst pipes, bathroom remodels.
  • Where you do it. Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Jenks.
  • Why you are trustworthy. Reviews, years in business, other local sites mentioning you, a website that does not look abandoned.

When Google understands those three things clearly, it is more willing to show you to someone in Broken Arrow typing "water heater leaking" at 6 a.m. That is the whole game. Not tricks. Clarity and trust, built over time.

Why search engine optimization for small businesses takes time

Here is the bit that frustrates you, Clyde, and I understand why.

When we publish a new page on your site, Google first has to find it. Then it has to decide what it is about. Then it compares it with every other plumbing page in Tulsa, many of which have been sitting there for years with lots of reviews behind them. Then it slowly tests where your page belongs.

None of that happens on your schedule. Most honest people in this industry will tell you to expect a few months before you see clear movement, and longer in competitive areas. Plumbing in a city your size is reasonably competitive. Two months is early. You are watering a lawn you planted in August and wondering why there is no grass yet.

What to watch instead of your ranking

Rankings bounce around. They change depending on who searches, where they are standing and what device they are holding. Checking yours every morning is like weighing yourself every hour on a diet. It will drive you mad and tell you very little.

Instead, look at these every month or so:

  1. Calls and form enquiries from the website. Are they slowly increasing?
  2. Which pages people land on. Are the new service pages starting to get visitors?
  3. The searches you appear for. Free tools from Google can show you which phrases are starting to bring you up, even on page two. Page two today often becomes page one later.
  4. Reviews. Are you getting new ones regularly?
  5. The question customers ask. "How did you hear about us?" Start writing the answers down.

If those are moving in the right direction, the work is working, even if you are not yet sitting at the very top.

What we did to your site, and why

You asked what you are paying for. Fair. Here is the short version:

  • We gave each of your main services its own page, instead of one page that said "Plumbing services."
  • We made sure every page has a clear title and headings that say what it is about.
  • We mentioned the areas you serve in plain sentences, not stuffed in.
  • We made the site load quickly on phones, because that is where your emergency customers are.
  • We put your phone number at the top of every page with a tap-to-call button.
  • We matched your business details exactly to your Google listing.

Every one of those is a seed. Some sprout faster than others.

Why it is worth the wait

Clyde, you pay for a newspaper ad and it works for a week. You pay for online ads and they work exactly as long as you keep paying. Both have their place.

That is the quiet strength of search engine optimization for small businesses. A page that ranks well for "emergency plumber Tulsa" can keep bringing calls for a long time, while you sleep, without you paying per click. It is slower to start and harder to switch off, which is exactly what you want from something that brings you work.

Think about it with plumber maths. If, over time, the website brings in even a couple of extra water heater jobs a month, what does that add up to over a year? I will let you do the sum. You are better with numbers than you pretend.

A few things you can do to help

You are not just a passenger here. These help more than you would think:

  • Ask every happy customer for a review. Your techs can do it at the end of each job.
  • Send me photos of real jobs, before and after. They make pages more useful and more trustworthy.
  • Tell me the questions customers ask on the phone. Those make great pages.
  • Stop checking your ranking every morning. (I mean it.)

Give it a few more months, Clyde. Then call me and tell me it is a scam. I am betting you won't.

Your friend with the website,

J.
